Year Two FIMR/HIV Sites Announced

September 24, 2010: The national partners are pleased to announce that all nine 2009-2010 sites will continue their FIMR/HIV implementation efforts into year two of the project (October 2010 – September 2011). Additionally, the state of Michigan has been accepted as a new site.

Continuing FIMR/HIV sites: Baltimore, MD; Broward County, FL; Chester, PA; State of Illinois; Indianapolis, IN; Newark, NJ; New Orleans, LA; Philadelphia, PA; and Washington, DC. Each of these sites made tremendous progress in establishing data collection and case review processes, gathering a diverse group of partners, selecting cases of perinatal HIV exposure for review and developing recommendations for community action that will improve systems of care for women living with HIV infection. We look forward to seeing their continued work over the next year!

New FIMR/HIV site: State of Michigan

All participating sites will continue to receive tailored resources and training from the FIMR/HIV national partners. Continue to check back on the website for updates about the work happening in these sites.

Racial/Ethnic Disparities among Children with Diagnoses of Perinatal HIV Infection

Recent MMWR Article: Racial/Ethnic Disparities among Children with Diagnoses of Perinatal HIV Infection – 34 States, 2004-2007

February 5, 2010:

Despite substantial declines in the number of HIV-infected infants in the United States, racial/ethnic minorities, especially blacks continue to be most significantly impacted by perinatal transmission.  For this analysis, researchers analyzed data on HIV diagnoses among children from 2004 to 2007 in 34 states with longstanding, name-based HIV reporting.  The average annual rate of diagnosis of perinatal HIV infection was 2.7 per every 100,000 infants.  Even though declines were observed in the annual rate of diagnosis of perinatal HIV infection for both black and Hispanic children, the rate among black children still was approximately 23 times higher than the rate among their white counterparts (12.3/100,000 vs. 0.5) and the rate among Hispanic children was four times higher (2.0) than the rate among their white counterparts.  Although black and Hispanic children only accounted for 37 percent of the population under the age of one, these groups represented 85 percent of all perinatal HIV diagnoses, compared to 81% of females and 64% males over the age of 13 with HIV diagnoses. Because the risk of transmission from an HIV-infected mother to her child can be greatly reduced with effective interventions, the authors emphasize that it is critical that all women – especially black and Hispanic women – have access to primary HIV prevention, reproductive health care, prenatal care and, if necessary, treatment for HIV.
